"I Do," Awareness and Willingness

  • The purpose of our sessions is to provide instruction, resources, skills, and hope to couples who are considering marriage as well as couples desiring to strengthen their marriage so that they can enjoy all of the benefits a happy marriage has to offer.

  • The benefits for couples who participate in marriage preparation or strengthening courses, such as this one, result in better communication, problem solving is more effective, and better relationships are reported than those couples who do not. In short, marriage education makes for a stronger marriage.

  • You start by evaluating you and your partner's marriage preparation experiences using the Marriage Preparation Survey.  There are six sessions and each is tailored to your experiences and expectations.  There are worksheets and planning tools to guide your thoughts and our discussions.  These sessions were designed to address the issues that newlywed couples struggle with most often in their relationships.

  •
Topics such as Your Partner, Finances, Sexual Relations-Famliy-Children, Personal Interests and Expectations, Business of Work and Marriage, and Communication -Conflict-Commitment are discussed.

  • "I Do," Awareness and Willingness is not the same as counseling, nor is it intended to be counseling. "I Do," Awareness and Willingness provides education about marriage preparation and marriage strengthening. Through your participation in the course, you will be asked to talk about issues with your partner/spouse which may at times be uncorfortable or difficult. This can be an unsettling process and may lead to conflict before things improve. However, if you find your marriage or partnership in serious trouble, you are advised to seek counseling or therapy from a licensed and qualified mental health professional. To find a therapist near you please visit the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy's therapist locator website at www.therapistlocator.net or look under "Mental Health Services or Marriage Therapists/Counselors" in your local phone book.
